HELVETIA ALPENGLUEHN SINGING SOCIETY

By Teresa Grossen Brandt 503-629-5925 or Resiyodels@aol.com

Winter has come and gone and once again it is time for the Helvetia Alpengluehn to begin practicing for Springfest!   This spring the choir will be mixing things up a bit, hoping more of you will be able to enjoy it.    The Springfest Concert will be held at Club Paesano/Cedarville Park but please NOTE THE CONCERT TIME AND CHANGES.   The concert will begin at 4:00 pm with dinner from 6:00-10:00 pm.   The dance will follow the concert until 10:30 pm.  We are planning some great entertainment, so please refer to your program for further details.

Thank you to all who came out to our Novemberfest Concert. It was nice having such a large turn-out. We would also like to thank our special guests again for the great concert.    Doug Stickler (accordionist, singer, songwriter) and Rouke Van Der Veen (guitarist. singer) were well received.   Doug’s rendition of the “Cowboy Yodel” brought down the house.    Doug would later remark that “usually the girls all go for Rouke, and I get their mothers.”   Just another illustration of their wide appeal but how could you ever go wrong, with a yodel and an accordion, with our audiences?

The choir enjoyed a holiday party this year on January 10th at Widmer Brewery and Gasthaus.  We thank Hans Huggler for providing entertainment on his accordion.  Next year we are hoping to once again join the other Swiss for their Christmas party; we missed seeing everyone.

At our first rehearsal on February 8th, we had a surprise visit by Shirley Abbott Clark our Saengermutter from Portland’s 1993 Saengerfest.  Since 1993, we have had a very hard time keeping track of her, as she follows her husband, Greg and his Air Force career around the world.  They are currently in Brussels, Belgium while Greg is serving with NATO Forces.  It was so nice to see her and so glad she stopped by.

On March 13th, the Helvetia Alpengluehn participated in a Multi-Cultural Choir Concert, held at the St. Matthews Lutheran Church in Beaverton. It was hosted by the Swedish choirs of Portland.   The groups participating besides our hosts included Korean, Spanish, and German and American choirs.  It concluded with a grand choir of all singers singing Let there be Peace on Earth and America the Beautiful.   It was a wonderful event and was a benefit for Mercy Corp and Haitian relief.    The Swedish plan on making it an annual event, with more groups participating.   We hope to be able to let you know about it in a future newsletter.

See you at Springfest!  Be looking for our next edition of Swiss News in November!  Take Care

The Helvetia Alpengluehn would like to thank several generous sponsors for their donations to our choir and programs:   Eugene “Gil” Gillenwater, Alice Gustafson, Elise Luscher Coiteux, Betty Powers and Otto Semet.

 Happy Birthday Wishes!

Dick Wismer celebrated his 100th birthday with his friends and family at Bethany Presbyterian Church on Saturday January 16th.

On January 24th, Frieda Obrist of Tillamook celebrated her 90th Birthday with friends and family at St John’s United Church of Christ in Tillamook.

On March 8th, Johanna Studer turned 99 years of age.  On March 7th she celebrated with her friends and family at Laurelhurst Village in Portland, where she resides

JODELKLUB EDELWYSS

By Ted Zurcher 503-803-0733 or Ted.Zurcher@intel.com

The Jodelklub Edelwyss members are coming out of their winter hibernation and will begin weekly rehearsals in April. We’re looking forward to learning some new songs as we prepare for the 2011 Saengerfest in Vancouver, B.C. If you were lucky enough to watch the Vancouver Winter Olympics in February, you saw that the Canadians know how to put on a great show, so we’re in for a treat.

Be sure to mark your calendars for the Jodelklub’s Fall Harvest Concert to be held September 25 at the German Hall on Division St. in Portland. We had our first fall concert last year, and it was a great success, so we’ve decided to have our concert in the fall again. Plans are still coming together, but be on the lookout for more details as we hope to announce some very special guests who will perform at the concert.

At our annual meeting in January, we elected new officers. Ted Zurcher was elected president, replacing Pierre Vireday; and Stan Marugg was elected Secretary, replacing Jack Burri. The club is very grateful to Pierre and Jack for their great service to the club.

During our winter hiatus, we were saddened by the loss of two former members, Robel Straubhaar and Frank Baur. The group was able to attend Frank’s funeral mass in Vancouver and sing two of his favorite songs. Both of our “Kameraden” will surely be missed.

Jodelklub member Fred Pfarrer continues to recover from a stroke that has affected his ability to swallow. He is at the Stoneybrook Assisted Living facility in Corvallis, OR. I’m sure he would love to hear from his fellow Swiss. You can contact him at the following address: Fred Pfarrer, c/o Stoneybrook Assisted Living,  4650 SW Hollyhock Circle Box #236, Corvallis, OR 97333.

We are always looking for new members. The only requirement is that you enjoy Swiss music and helping keep our Swiss traditions alive. A good singing voice is nice, but is not required. Just show up ready to have some fun. For more information, please contact Ted Zurcher at (503) 803-0733 or by email at ted.zurcher@intel.com.

A recipe for all those summer days ahead…

Alpengluehn director, Cliff Fairley has kindly shared one of his family favorites.   It has become a choir favorite as well.  The recipe was originally made by his mother, Frieda Staeger Fairley. Cliff has updated the recipe.

Cliff's Mint Tea                                           Yield: 1 gallon

Bring 2 quarts of water to boil; remove from heat and add 12 bags of tea, regular or decaffeinated and
12 sprigs of fresh mint, (6 inch stems with leaves): let steep for 20 minutes. While it steeps add two 12 oz. cans of  frozen lemonade concentrate and 5 trays of ice cubes (60-70 cubes) to the bottom of a large pitcher or picnic jug.  Once tea is done steeping, discard tea bags and strain to remove mint.  Pour the remainder, while still very warm, over the lemonade and ice.  Add additional water to yield 1 gallon or adjust amount to taste.
